Our Ethos
In Japan, Kimonos are no longer regularly worn other than during important events like weddings or funerals. Due to this, many households view kimonos as a waste of space and often discard of them. This creates a lot of textile waste and is also a loss of culture.
By using second-hand Kimono fabric to create modernised designs, Mirai is reintroducing wearing kimonos on a daily basis to more generations, all while reducing waste.

About Us
Mirai was founded by Amelie and Mariko in 2024 as a part of the NZ Young Enterprise Scheme.
After hearing about the frequent abandonment of kimonos in Japan, we felt that this long legacy of beautiful fabrics must not end with our generation. This issue, combined with our passion for fashion and sustainability, was what brought about the inspiration for Mirai.
Mirai was born out of the combined love for the innate culture and history that fashion holds, and the desire to reduce fashion waste.
Mirai hopes to spread awareness about Kimono Culture and inspire individuals of all ages to wear this fabric with pride.
Our Production Process
Mirai aims to be as transparent as possible about our production process.
We begin by sourcing our kimonos from Japan, mainly through second hand markets.
After washing and dissembling the kimonos, we use our original patterns to sew our pieces.
It's as simple as that! Your garment is brought from Japan to New Zealand, sewn with care and delivered to you.
Delivery & Returns
As all orders are made on demand, we have a zero returns policy :)
We currently ship within New Zealand. Once orders are received, they should take around 10 days to reach you!
We make sure that our production process is sustainable as possible from start to finish. This includes shipping, where we use mailing bags made from 100% ocean bound plastic pollution.
